Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav was arrested by police in Lucknow on Sunday after eight people, including four farmers, staged a protest outside his home in Lakhimpur on Sunday to prevent him from being killed. Shivpal Yadav, leader of the Prakashil Samajwadi Party, was detained while on his way to the violence-hit district.

A police vehicle was also torched near the Gautampalli police station in Lucknow, a few hundred meters from where Akhilesh had organized the protest. Although no senior police officer was available for comment, sources confirmed that the identity of the person who set the vehicle on fire has not yet been confirmed.

As the entire Vikramaditya Marg was cordoned off using barricades to prevent Akhilesh from leaving the area, a heavy police bombardment was seen outside the SP chief’s house from early morning.

Eight people, including four farmers, were killed when a three-SUV convoy belonging to Union Home Minister Ajay Mishra attacked a group of anti-agricultural protesters leading to a clash.

Earlier, Akhilesh Yadav was detained by security forces while trying to leave Lucknow to assess the situation in the violence-hit areas. So, Akhilesh organized a sit-in protest outside his home.

In a series of posts on its official Twitter and Facebook accounts, the Samajwadi Party wrote in Hindi: “Police have arrested our national leader who went to Lakhimpur on the orders of this arrogant government. All Samajwadi Party should sit in Tarna wherever they are.

Meanwhile, Mayawati, leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), said the party’s national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Chandra Mishra had been placed under house arrest for failing to direct a party representative to the area.

“As two BJP ministers were involved in the tragic Gary case in UP, proper government investigation into the incident and severe punishment for the victims and severe punishment for the perpetrators do not seem possible. He wrote on Twitter.
