Harmanpreet, Rodriguez to play for Melbourne Renegades in WBBL

India T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and youngster Jemima Rodriguez will play for the Melbourne Renegades in the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League, event organizers announced on Wednesday.

Harmanpreet, 32, previously worked with the Sydney Thunder.

Shafali Verma and Radha Yadav have been signed by the Sydney Sixers.

“It means a lot (to come back). WBBL has given me a lot of experience and a great platform where I can perform and execute,” Harmanpreet was quoted as saying on the team’s website.

“I’m back with a new team called the Renegades. I hope this season will be good for us. This is my first season with them and I definitely want to make an impact.

Rodriguez said he was entering good form in the WBBL.

For me, the main goal here is to go back and play cricket, play some good cricket and enjoy what I do. I know when I do that, when I’ve in that headspace, I can give what I can, ”Rodriguez Cricket.com quoted him as saying.

Rodriguez was not part of the Indian team that lost the ODI series 1-2 to Australia, but he had an outstanding performance in the recent 100 series, where he scored 249 runs in seven innings for the Northern Superchargers.

“Whatever the goal, I want to give my 100 percent every time I am on the field, and the trophy for the Renegades (we can win).

“I’m so excited, I’m looking forward to it, I have a lot to learn, I’m sure about it,” he said.

Renigates coach Simon Helmott praised Harmanpreet’s talent. He is currently sidelined due to a thumb injury and was ruled out of India’s one-day international against Australia earlier this month.

“Harmanpreet’s achievement internationally over the past decade speaks for itself,” Helmott said.

“She is a match winner and can take the game from the opponent in the heartbeat. We also see Harmanpreet with her experience and leadership being an important addition to our team.

The coach was impressed with the way Rodriguez played in ‘The Hundred’.

“Jemima is an incredibly talented young player who has already made her mark on the world stage at the age of 21,” the coach said.

He recently excelled in The Hundred Over in England. He is an energetic player who can score quickly and in all parts of the field.
