A 16-year-old girl in Meerut district died on Friday afternoon two days after being assaulted and raped on her way home from school.
Police said they rounded up some suspects following a protest by the girl’s family at a local station, but the main culprit has yet to be caught. “Based on the CCTV footage available from her school to her house, we have identified some of the detainees. We hope to arrest the culprits soon,” Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhakar Chaudhry said.
Police said the woman was waiting for the e-rickshaw after appearing for the exam at 4.30pm on Wednesday. But she did not return home. Her family searched for her but could not find her. At 9 p.m., the little girl lay unconscious outside her home.
The girl told her mother that the driver of the e-rickshaw had ingested a sharp drink, after which she fainted, police said.
