New Delhi:

The proposal to raise the minimum age for marriage for women from 18 to 21 was reportedly approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

Prime Minister Modi, during his Independence Day address last year, mentioned this plan.

“This government continues to be concerned about the health of daughters and sisters. To save daughters from malnutrition, it is essential that they get married at the right age,” he said.

Currently, the minimum age for marriage is 21 for men and 18 for women.

The government plans to amend the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, the Special Marriage Act and the Hindu Marriage Act.

The NITI Commission headed by Jaya Jaitley supported the proposal.

The working group, set up in June last year, consisted of senior government official VK Paul, senior officials from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Ministry of Law.

The recommendations were submitted in December as the task force insisted that a woman must be at least 21 years old during her first pregnancy.

Delay in marriages has a positive financial, social and health impact on families, the community and children.
