Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Anshu Malik and Sarita More for their outstanding performance at the World Wrestling Championships on Sunday. Sarita More won bronze and Anshu Malik became the first Indian woman to compete in the World Championship final. Anshu lost in the final of the gold medal to Helen Lucy Maruli in Oslo, Norway on Thursday. “Congratulations to @Orianshu and @saritamor3 who won silver at the World Wrestling Championships 2021. Congratulations to these great athletes for their future endeavors,” the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.

Anshu, 19, won the gold medal 1-0 at the break, but his rival, who won the gold in Rio 2016, pulled the Indians to a 2-1 lead.

Maroli was able to take the lead and extended his lead to 3-1 to twist Anshu and get another point.

The American then had Anshu on his back on the mat and gave the match to referee Maruli by the fall.

Before Anshu’s Friday, the Indian women won five bronze medals in the Marquee competition.
