Rishabh’s maturity has gone through the roof: Ponting

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting feels his young captain Rishabh Pandey’s maturity has “gone through the roof” over the past two seasons.

The 23-year-old was given the responsibility of leading the Delhi Capitals in the first phase of IPL 2021 after regular captain Shreyas Iyer withdrew due to a shoulder injury.

“Rishabh’s maturity over the last two seasons has gone through the roof,” Ponting, who is the all-time great of the game, described the cricketer on Tuesday.

“When I first arrived, he went to the scene. I had said for a long time that we were going to see the outing of someone who was going to play for India. I could see it coming. I could see how much he wanted to be in every Indian team.

“We need a better player to drop him from the Indian team.”

Under Bond’s captaincy, DC reached their first IPL final last season.

“He has done a great job so far (leading DC in the IPL). We are all striving for something special. This year we want to go one step further and Rishabh is going to play an intermediate role in that.

Before the start of the first phase of the league in India earlier this year, Iyer backed Bond as captain of the Ponting team in his absence, saying the youth would enjoy additional responsibility.

Also, DC topped the IPL life-bubble with six wins from eight matches before the Covid-19 cases led to the suspension of the event.

Bandh, who was interested in their first silverware, said they wanted to give the team just 10-15 per cent more than last season.

We are better off this year than last. We have been focusing on this process for two-three years. We don’t have to do many things differently than last year. We can do the same and give 10-15 per cent extra, ”Bandh said ahead of the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With the likes of Marcus Stones and Shimran Hetmire on the team, the Australian legend has great confidence in his middle order.

“The Stones have really made a big impact on us. He has the ability to be the best all-rounder in world cricket, especially on the white ball.

Ponting is pleased that Sreyas has rejoined the team, providing extra firepower in the batting line-up.

I’m glad to have him back on the team. He is an exceptional player for Delhi, a world-class player. It makes our team even more complete. “

He said the inclusion of Shreyas in the playing XI would not affect their bowling combination with two South African fast bowlers, Kagiso Rabada and Andre Norde.

Ponting said the vibe and atmosphere surrounding his team was good enough to go into their first game of the second round of the league.

He said there are plenty of senior players in DC, including Steve Smith, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin, some of whom often miss play time, but managing them has never been an issue as the head coach treats them all equally.

“I manage everyone the same way, everyone on our team is on the same side. We treat each other equally. This is definitely what we are trying to go through. We have good youth and experience.

At the end of the day, we relied on our senior players because Rishabh will not always be right. So we are inviting everyone on the trip. “

Bandh said the team’s performance in the first half was good from a psychological point of view but they were not talking about what happened a few months ago.

“In the first half that performance was obviously counted but we wanted to focus on one match at a time. We discussed it as a team and did not focus on our performance.

As a player, I didn’t think much of it. I try to take advantage of most of the opportunities available to me, progress, and keep learning every day. ”

When asked about his greatest learning from his predecessor in the Indian team – the famous Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he said “focus on this process and the results will come”.

When asked about his leadership, he said, “I try to keep the environment light. Anyone can discuss anything with me or Ricky. Youth and experience help to move forward together.”

I learned from Ricky that everyone on the team should be treated equally – players and support staff. That’s when special things happen and as a captain, that’s the only thing you want.

Regarding Wednesday’s opponents, Ponting noted that the SRH is not the highest-scoring side, but “they support the defensive side of the game.”

“We feel like we are well prepared. I hope our boys finish the job.
