The Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested Ramgarthal Station House Officer (SHO) Jagat Narain Singh and Sub-Inspector Akshay Kumar Misra in Gorakhpur on Sunday in connection with the alleged murder of Kanpur businessman Manish Gupta at a city hotel last month. These are the first arrests in this case. Two Gorakhpur policemen were among the six accused of beating a property dealer to death during a raid on a hotel on September 28.
The six accused are SHO Jagat Narain Singh of Amethi, sub-inspectors Akshay Kumar Misra of Pallia, Vijay Yadav of Jaunpur and Raul Dubey of Mirzapur and constables Kamlesh Singh Yadav and Prachand Kumar (both Kaji).
The arrests came a day after the SIT Increased rewards 25,000 to 1 lakh for each police officer charged.
Police conducted a search to nab sub-inspectors Vijay Yadav and Rahul Dube and constables Kamlesh Singh Yadav and Prashant Kumar.
During a hotel check, Gupta, a resident of Burra area of Kanpur, allegedly assaulted Gupta in his room as he resisted his behavior. The allegation was made in a police complaint lodged by the businessman’s wife Meenakshi.
However, police said Gupta fell to his death in the room where he was staying with two of his friends. Police said the hotel search was a routine search and they were looking for the culprits.
Earlier, a video was released online showing Gupta lying unconscious on the ground and later being taken away by a few policemen. Police said the incident appeared to be video. Police have taken a long time to transfer Gupta from a private hospital to a government hospital.
Based on Meenakshi’s complaint, a murder case was first registered against Jagat Narain Singh, Akshay Kumar Misra, Vijay Yadav and three unidentified persons at Ramgarh station.
During the interrogation, police recorded the confessions of Meenakshi and businessman friends Harveer Singh and Pradeep Kumar, both of whom were from Gurgaon. Police also questioned hotel staff and collected hotel footage from the hotel and two hospitals that took Gupta.
