Sri Lanka won the first Test against the West Indies by 187 runs in Galle on Thursday. Chasing a target of 348, the West Indies were bowled out for 160 before tea on the final day. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat. India won the toss and elected to bat first. The West Indies, who had scored 52 for 6 at the end of the fourth day, stuck to the opening match but fell short after lunch. Lasith Embuldeniya took five wickets and Ramesh Mendis supplemented him with four scales.
For the tourists, Nkrumah Bonner was unbeaten on 68 – one of the three West Indies batsmen to play double figures in their second innings, the others being Joshua da Silva, 54, and Rahim Cornwall 13.
The second Test starts in Galle on Monday.
