The by-election is scheduled for October 30, and the deadline for filing nominations is October 8.
The Lok Sabha seat is part of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.
In a statement from Delhi, the BJP announced that it had decided to field tribal leader Mahesh Kavit, 44, for the upcoming by-elections.
This is the first major election for Mr. Kavith, who retired as a sub-inspector of the Indian Reserve Battalion and entered politics in 2014.
In 2015, he was elected as a councilor on the BJP ticket to Dadra and Nagar Haveli district panchayats and served as vice-president of the local body till 2020.
Although Congress has not yet announced its candidate, Mohan Telkar’s wife Calaben’s name is in the running to run in the by-elections, probably as an independent candidate, sources said.
On February 22, Mr Telker committed suicide by hanging himself at a hotel in Mumbai’s Marine Drive area.
Mr. Telkar, who was a member of both the Congress and the BJP at different times of his political career, was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times from Dadra and Nagar Haveli constituencies.
In 2019, he won the Lok Sabha election as an independent candidate.
