India recorded 8,774 new COVID-19 cases and 621 related deaths on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 3,45,72,523 and the death toll to 4,68,554, according to a health ministry bulletin. During the same period, 9,481 recoveries were reported across the country. With this, the national recovery rate is currently 98.34 percent, the highest since March 2020. The number of active cases in the country was 1,05,069 on Sunday, the bulletin also shows.

The new Govt variant, ‘Omicron’, has been declared a worrying variant by the World Health Organization (WHO), sparking global concern. This variation was first detected in South Africa earlier this month. Since then, the new strain has already been detected in many European countries. ‘Omigron’ is said to be more contagious than the delta variant.
