We are not in politics to rob or crush someone under Fortune: UP BJP leader to party volunteers

As the BJP faces defeat in the Lakhimpur Gary violence, its UPA leader Swatantra Dev Singh on Sunday urged party workers to win the trust of the people by saying, “We are not robbing politics to hold on” or “crush under a fortune teller”.

His comments came after Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra was arrested on Saturday in connection with the October 3 hacking of four farmers by an SUV in Lakhimpur.

Addressing a meeting of the BJP’s Minority Morcha, Singh said, “We did not come to rob (the people) in politics or to crush anyone under the Fortuner (SUV).”

You get votes by your behavior. When 10 people from your community praise you, my heart swells (with pride). You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people, “said Tariq al-Hashimi, the party’s secretary general.

The BJP leader’s remarks came hours after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused him of trying to “save” a Union minister’s son in the case, and said no one in the country was safe except the BJP leaders and their “millionaire friends”.

Four farmers were embarrassed by an SUV when a group agitating against the federal government’s three new farm laws protested against the visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Moriya.

Two BJP employees and a driver were reportedly beaten to death by angry protesters, while a local journalist was also violently killed.

The incident sparked a political storm and pushed the BJP government back in the polling state.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which has been campaigning against the Centre’s three farm laws, has demanded the arrest of the minister and his son, accusing them of being involved in a pre-planned conspiracy to violence.

Farmers’ unions said that if the government did not accept their demands by October 11, a ‘Shaheed Kisan Yatra’ would be held from Lakhimpur Gari with the ashes of the slain farmers.

A nine-member panel headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (HQ) Upendra Agarwal has been set up to probe the FIR registered against the minister’s son and others in the violence case.
