WhatsApp indicators for end-to-end encryption on calls, status status

WhatsApp works on two new visual indicators to inform users about end-to-end encryption used in different areas of the messaging app. The iOS version of WhatsApp found features of the app’s call and status screen. On the call screen, users are informed that their personal calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, while on the status screen, a message indicates that the user’s status is end-to-end encrypted.

New display indicators on WhatsApp WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo found in the iOS version of WhatsApp. This feature is said to be under construction, which means users will not be able to view it at this time. Screenshots of the new indicators show the words “Your personal calls are end-to-end encrypted” under the call list. Similarly, the status screen displays the words “Your status is end-to-end encrypted” in screenshots shared by WABetaInfo.

WhatsApp uses the same encryption protocol used for signal, which today is considered the gold standard in secure mobile messaging applications. In 2016 the company always enabled end-to-end encryption for all chats for its one billion user base. End-to-end encryption is designed to protect communications so that only the sender and receiver can see the content. However, unlike Signal, metadata (or information about your messages) is not protected by end-to-end encryption and is shared with parent company Meta.

It is worth noting that WhatsApp has already released a series of ads on TV and social media about the end-to-end encryption and one-time view feature used for messages and links in use. WhatsApp also claims that users’ chats are protected by end-to-end encryption when starting a new conversation. Designed to notify users that new indicators, status and calls are protected by the same technology and will be released in beta and standard versions of the app in the future.
