World abandons plan to release NFT after outcry over Stocker 2 developer GSC game fans

Shortly after announcing the launch of NFTs affiliated with Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl, the developers of the upcoming Post Apocalyptic Game announced that they would be abandoning the project “after feedback” from the public. “The interests of our fans and players are paramount to the team,” the company said. The first-person shooter game was developed and released by GSC Game World, and will be released in April 2022 on Microsoft Windows and Xbox Series X / S. GSC Game World has announced that it will lead the community to own a portion of the game using blockchain technology.

The developer of Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl announced on Wednesday that it will be partnering with NFT platform DMarket on digital items, the sequel to the 2009 cult hit Stalker: Call of Pripyat. One of the NFTs they planned to offer would have allowed the owner to become a “metahuman”, meaning they would be transformed into a non-player character (NPC) in the game.

The update came as many gamers did not support the idea, creating memes on Twitter and Reddit to express their frustration. Some fans even said they would not buy Stalker 2. GSC immediately gave an explanation but the fans refused to buy it.

The setback against this move may be partly because the company did not elaborate on why it wants to launch NFTs affiliated with the popular game. Also, there were environmental concerns as GSC did not specify which blockchain would be used. Some blockchains use more energy than others, but most people cannot distinguish between them.

However, the initial plan to create “Metahuman” involved giving NFT buyers names and aliases for their game characters. These NPCs are allowed to have cameos as “partner, mate or adversary”.

GSC Game World responded with a defensive, all-caps rebuttal on Thursday afternoon that will be withdrawn soon. “GSC Game World is an independent game development studio,” it began, “like all other developments, we need two main resources: time and money.” Stalker 2 was first announced in 2010 and released in 2012. But so far for some reason the game could not be released. It is now scheduled for release on April 28, 2022.
